Miss Emma celebrated a birthday yesterday... she's 12.
Can't believe it really. It just feels like yesterday that Matt and I drove up to Portland to meet her. We walked up the stairs to see her sitting in a puppy crate. She cocked her little head sideways at us, and it was love at first sight! She curled up in my lap on the way home that evening, and she has been warming my heart ever since!

She's a funny girl. Personality PLUS! She was Matt and my first baby. She gave us great practice for potty & manner training, and patience, and waking up in the night to take care of something else, and how to baby proof or puppy proof life so no one gets say poisoned or injured ;)!

I still remember walking Emma in our very first fashion show to kick of her very own store. Our days of riding our bike to work; her in the bike basket, me on my cruiser.... wind in my hair, wind in her wrinkles. Her and I have changed a lot over the years. We've both aged. She maybe quicker on the outside than I have, but we've been through all of it together. She is my little companion. The heartbeat at my feet!

In her twelve years of life as a shop owner, she has moved 3 times, welcomed two human sisters home, a doggy sister, and a brother cat. She is never jealous. She is pretty secure in her place in our hearts. She knows she could never be replaced. She sort of has a more the merrier kind of personality. She spent many a day in the shop greeting customers, and saying hello. Now that she is more mature she prefers to stay in the comforts of her own home. She is retired these days, but she still loves to come in from time to time to say hello, & run a good 'pug circle' around the shop.

It's funny, there was a day when everyone knew what Emma Downtown stands for... these days, everyone doesn't always realize since she isn't a presence in the shop each day like she once was. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you get to know the girl behind the name. The girl behind the very heart of our shop! It's Emma! Sweet, funny, snores like a truck driver, smells like Newport Oregon, toothless, blind as a bat, deaf as can be, happy go lucky, Emma!

Our big sidewalk sale is over now, and it's all been neatly packed away for another sale, another day. Now, the fun begins... well, at least for me. Now, we get to start unpacking the boxes and boxes of items that have arrived to greet us for fall! I have to admit, I'm not quite ready for fall just yet. I think I'll be clinging on to these last dog days of summer with all my might. But, I am excited to tear the shop up here in a couple of weeks (we'll be closed from the 24-the 6th to re-do for fall) and make Emma look brand new yet again!

I love transforming the shop into the next season. I have been busy for weeks finding many vintage treasures, and brainstorming some creative ideas for this years fall windows, and vignettes! Can you hardly wait???

I'm ready to put paper on the windows, say goodbye to my family, and spend many a day and night making the shop fabulous for fall!!! I know, I'm kind of nuts, but hey it's what I do!

Fall is my favorite season by far... oh the colors, the fabrics, the chill in the air, and the sunshine on my face, I love it! What's your favorite season?

Well, you still have a few more days to take advantage of our Summer Sale going on right now before all of the transforming begins, so come on down and see what kind of treasure you can find.... after all Summer kind of just got here! :) I think there is probably still a lot of time to be able to wear our Summer fashions!

Crazy Days are here again!!!...

I remember Crazy Days downtown fondly and vividly from my childhood. It was a tradition. A must, on our summer to-do list. We would make sure to get downtown bright and early to find the best things, stop at Mary Anna's bakery for some doughnuts, and shop until we were starving for lunch. We'd usually pop down and eat at Olde` Town Cafe, where I would always eat my favorite grilled cheese and Tatar tots. The rest of the afternoon, we would spend browsing and shopping through downtown. Crazy Days was an EVENT!

That was a long time ago. I won't say how long, because a girl must never reveal her age... Things have changed a bit downtown since then. Mary Anna's bakery, is now First Burger, and Olde` Town Cafe is now Clemenza's, but for us, Crazy Days is still an EVENT!

We start working on getting our Crazy Days merchandise all ready for our sale weeks in advance. It gives us a chance to part with things that just didn't sell during the regular seasons. It also gives you a chance to make some of our lemons your lemonade! Because let me tell you, at 20-90% off, you can't beat the prices on what we've got!

This year just may be, our biggest and craziest sale of all, as I've been feeling quite ruthless with the older merchandise, ready to start fresh and bring in new!

So, tell your friends... invite your girlfriends downtown for the day, and make your own new tradition... grab a cup of coffee, and some breakfast at one of the great restaurants, and come SHOP!!! It will be an EVENT I PROMISE!

Tickets will be available at the Albany Visitors Association, in Historic Downtown Albany on the day of the tour from 10am to 4pm in the Two Rivers Market, 250 Broadalbin SW #110.

The 33rd Annual Tour of Historic Homes is scheduled for Saturday, July 31, 2010.

- The tour will feature several historic homes including one built in 1885 celebrating 125 years.

- Along with the homes on tour, guests will visit the Historic Carousel and Museum, the Whitespires Church, United Presbyterian Church, the Albany Regional Museum and the Monteith House Museum.

- A horse-drawn wagon and vintage trolley ride are included in the ticket price.

- Light refreshments will be provided by the Monteith Historical Society.

- This is a wonderful way for you to slow down, relax and enjoy yourself so please plan to join us on Saturday, July 31, 2010.

This tour is self-guided. Visitors can tour the homes in any order they like. Transportation is by your own vehicle, horse drawn wagon and vintage trolley.

Albany’s Annual Interior Tour of Historic Homes is a great opportunity to peek inside and see for yourself why Albany stands out. Homeowners and Hosts/Hostesses will be available to answer questions about restoration efforts, historic house maintenance and why they chose Albany as home.

Albany’s Annual Interior Tours were created by a group of friends and neighbors to share the past through the architecture of historic dwellings. They are coordinated by Albany’s Historical Interior Tour Committee and sponsored by the Albany Visitors Association.

Over 28 wineries are expected to participate this year. Be sure to get here and purchase your wine glass and tasting tickets. Last year over 1,000 wine glasses were sold.

The Loft Tour and Wine Walk starts at 4pm and goes until 8pm

Here is a list of the lofts on the tour this year:

1) Loft 44, 422 1st Ave. W.

This Loft used to be the news room of the Albany Herald newspaper. The rooms at the front of the loft were the offices of the editor and presumably the publisher. Owner John Boock

2) Masonic Hall, 431 1st Ave. W.

The St. Johns Lodge No.17 was built circa 1880 and extensively remodeled in 1915 by local architect Charles Burggraf. Notice the great original hardware and unpainted wood trim. The Lodge’s charter dates to July 1858.

3) Howard Building 124 Ferry St. SW.

Built in 1929 and added on to in 1935 downstairs was the offices of the Greater Oregon Newspaper the loft was the Howard family’s living quarters. The loft was remodeled in the 1980s (The printing press is still in the basement) Owner Mike McLain

4) Duedall Potts Bldg., 325 1st Ave. W.

This comfortable loft has great high ceilings and original windows. This apartment was the first project that was funded by CARA in 2002. Tenant Patsy Mecca.

5) Western Union Bldg., 311 1st Ave. W.

Entrance in the parking lot behind the building.

This loft was last on tour two years ago when it was in the process of being remodeled. You will love the results!
Tenants Mary and Jeanette French.

6) Pastime Saloon Building. 211 First Ave W.

The main floor originally housed Pastime Saloon, (now Cappie’s Brewhouse) a millinery shop and an insurance office. The lofts in this building were originally used as office space. Owner Richard May.

7) Flinn Offices and Flinn Block Hall, 222 1st Ave. W.

The Flinn offices were opened just last February. Be sure you notice the great original floors and woodwork. The offices were used as apartments in the 1940s. The Flinn Block Hall was used as a dinner theater in the 1990s. Owners Marc & Anni Manley

8) Huston-Conn addition, 214 1st Ave. W.

Built in the 1890s This loft was most likely used by the Hustons when they owned the grocery store downstairs. Notice the faux woodgraining on the doors, some of it is original and some is only a couple of months old. Can you tell the
difference? The ceiling light fixtures in the foyer are original. Owner Skip Throop.

9) Huston-Conn Grocery Building 212 1st Ave. W.

Entrance is in the alley.

Built in circa 1880, this was the Huston & Conn Grocery store below the upstairs loft was at one time connected to the hotel next door. The wood work here is also faux grained. Owner Skip Throop.

10) Revere House Hotel 120 A&B Ellsworth Street NW

The Revere House Hotel lost it’s top floor to a fire. Since then the now two story building has housed a drug store and more recently Jordan’s Jewelry. The Lofts were abandoned about 1960 until they were renovated in 2007. The windows are original to the c1910 post-fire renovation.

11) Old Post Office, 240 2nd Ave. SW.

This building was used as City Hall from 1961 until 1984. Upstairs you will see the former council chambers and an original marble walled bathroom. The windows at the front of the building are the perfect vantage place to watch the Veterans Day parade. Owner Bob Lund.

12) Tripp & Tripp Bldg., 211 2nd Ave. SW.

Entrance is on Ellsworth St.

This upstairs space has never been on the Loft Tour before and we are excited to see it. Owners Rod and Randy Tripp,

13) Albany Regional Museum, 136 Lyon St. S.

Great views can be had from this former Knights of Pythias meeting room. The upstairs now houses storage shelves for the museums collection, as well as work rooms for preservation and inventory work.

14) Borden Bldg., 211 Jefferson St.

You may want to drive to this building, it is at the intersection of Water Ave. and Jefferson St. across the railroad tracks. Owner John Boock.

Linnea's Lights has been cultivated from a deep family lineage, upon a foundation of ecologically friendly, handcrafted, entrepreneurial spirit. Lynn Manley and her daughter Laura Cler remain firmly rooted in the spirit of their Midwestern upbringing. Lynn was a full-time, working mother, so Laura forged her young & most impressionable years at her grandparent's multi-generational house in Indiana. Laura's grandmother, great-grandmothers, and close family members all helped raise her and instill in her the values of family, tradition, and craftsmanship. As a child, Laura and the other children spent their days in exploration, craft, & playtime, and assisted in the garden & kitchen whenever necessary. Lynn & Laura's intrinsic appreciation of nature's bounty & handcrafts has been shaped by the generations of strong and nurturing women in their family. While they always remained Midwesterners at heart, the family moved around the country. The moves allowed new business opportunities for Lynn, and throughout her travels she held a variety of positions within corporate structures and small businesses. Laura spent the first part of her career working in buying/purchasing and inventory planning for private label merchandise with domestic and international partners. She refined her experiences under the guidance of Levi Strauss & Co., and became responsible for the growth and management of key strategic partnerships within several channels of LS&Co. Laura's work with the company taught her to appreciate the value of heritage as represented through quality, integrity and social consciousness, all of which would serve as essential principles in the Linnea's Lights brand. Throughout her life, Lynn maintained a passion for fragrances & luxury items, and was inspired to create her own line of candles as a hobby. Often disappointed in the high price of luxury items, she knew she could create a superior product of better value. Lynn & her husband, Danny Manley, began selling her handcrafted candles at local craft fairs and markets in Indiana, and soon the couple had propelled their candle-making hobby into a small, freestanding company - Linnea's Lights had been conceived! After Danny's passing, Laura partnered with her mother, and, with the additional help of close family and friends, Linnea's Lights launched as the luxury brand that it is today. The dynamic mother/daughter team kept the name Linnea's Lights, which is in tribute to their Swedish family lineage. The Swedish name, Linnea, from which the name "Lynn" originated, has been in their family for five generations, and is a nod to the national flower of Sweden. The recipes you will find in their books

We think these books make a beautiful gift,

because they will bring you a fresh new

perspective on what to feed your family!

My Favorite Recipe that I have tried so far is:

Dino's Potatoes

1 (10 1/2 - ounce) can cream of chicken soup

1 cup sour cream

8 oz. shredded cheddar cheese

3/4 cup melted butter

1 small onion, chopped

1 family sized bag tater tots

6 slices bread, cut into cubes

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl combine chicken soup, sour cream,

cheese, and 1/2 of the melted butter.

Fold in the chopped onion and tater tots.

Transfer this mixture into a 9x13 baking dish.

Sprinkle bread cubes over and drizzle

with the other half of the melted butter.

Bake for one hour

Serves 8-10
